Breda 1 – 100

Breda 1-100, Series of paintings and prints 2011-13

The works in the series Breda 1-100 are variations of Diego Velázquez’s famous painting “The Surrender of Breda” from 1633-35. The connection of the variants to the work that served as a model varies: some of the variants are abstractions whose colors are taken from Velázquez’s painting, while some of them resemble their model a lot in terms of form, but the color scheme is different. The main work of the series “Breda 100” is the same size (310 x 370 cm) as Velázquez’s painting in Madrid’s Prado museum, however, it consists of a hundred separate parts painted in different ways.
