Impressionism Checklist: Features & Painting Tips

I recently taught an art course on impressionist painting. After the course one of the students asked me if I could make an impressionism checklist for the students to use later and review what they had learned. I said I could make a two-part list to be published as a blog post, with one part listing the stylistic features of impressionism and the other part providing instructions for creating an impressionist painting.

So here is a checklist for recognizing Impressionist style, and another about how to paint in that spirit. These are based on both historical knowledge and the practices of artists like Monet, Renoir, and Pissarro. At the end of the post, the checklists are in Finnish

Checklist 1: Stylistic Features of Impressionist Painting

1. Visible brushstrokes – loose, rapid strokes that reveal the act of painting.
2. Light and color over line – focus on optical color mixing rather than outlines.
3. Open composition – cropping and asymmetry inspired by photography and Japanese prints.
4. Everyday subjects – modern life, leisure, and landscapes instead of historical scenes.
5. Outdoor (“en plein air”) painting – capturing natural light and transient effects.
6. Vibrant, high-key palette – pure, bright pigment straight onto canvas.
7. Shifting atmospheric effects – depicting specific times of day or weather conditions.
8. Interest in perception – showing how the eye perceives rather than idealizing forms.
9. Lack of black – shadows are painted with complementary and cool tones.
10. Focus on momentary impression – rendering fleeting experiences, not polished finish.

Checklist 2: Instructions for Creating an Impressionist Painting

1. Choose an everyday subject – a garden, a street corner, or sunlight on water.
2. Work on location if possible – observe changing light and atmosphere.
3. Use small, quick brushstrokes – aim for spontaneity, not perfection.
4. Mix color optically – apply separate dabs of color side by side rather than blending on the palette.
5. Avoid black paint – use complementary colors (e.g., purple for yellow shadows) to create depth.
6. Capture the light’s effect – paint what you see under that specific lighting.
7. Simplify detail – focus on color relationships and value contrasts.
8. Keep your palette clean and bright – pure pigments evoke luminosity.
9. Vary brushwork – short strokes, broken color, and occasional scumbled textures.
10. Stop before it’s overworked – aim for a fresh look that preserves immediacy and energy.

Checklist 1: Impressionistisen maalauksen tyylipiirteitä

1. Näkyvät siveltimenvedot – irtonaiset, nopeat vedot, joissa näkyy maalaamisen prosessi.
2. Valo ja väri viivan sijaan – keskity optiseen värisekoitukseen ääriviivojen sijaan.
3. Avoin sommittelu – rajaus ja epäsymmetria valokuvauksen ja japanilaisten puupiirrosten inspiroimana.
4. Arkipäiväiset aiheet – nykyelämän, vapaa-ajan ja maisemien kuvaaminen historiallisten aiheiden sijasta.

Checklist 2: Ohjeet impressionistisen maalauksen tekemiseen

1. Valitse arkipäiväinen aihe – puutarha, katunäkymä, auringonvalo vedessä.
2. Maalaa paikan päällä, jos mahdollista – havaitse valo ja tunnelma muutoksessaa.
3. Käytä lyhyitä ja nopeita siveltimenvetoja – pyri spontaanisuuteen, älä täydellisyyteen.
4. Sekoita väri optisesti – aseta erilliset väriläiskät vierekkäin ilman palettisekoitusta.
5. Vältä mustaa maalia – käytä täydentäviä värejä syvyyden luomiseksi (esim. violetti keltaisen varjoihin).
6. Taltioi valon vaikutus – maalaa, mitä näet juuri tietyssä valaistuksessa.
7. Yksinkertaista yksityiskohdat – keskity värisuhteisiin ja valoisuuden kontrastiin.
8. Pidä paletti puhtaana ja kirkkaana – puhtaat pigmentit luovat valovoimaisuutta.
9. Vaihtele siveltimen käyttöä – lyhyitä vetoja, rikottua väriä ja kevyitä, sumentavia kerroksia.
10. Lopeta ennen ylityöstämistä – säilytä tuoreus ja välittömyys maalauksessa.
